PGCPS submit report to MD lawmakers…

…on governance structure.

sh-flag

The Prince George’s County school system — operating under a new governance structure for the past six months — has hired a new superintendent, gained six new school board members and is pushing forward with plans to reinvent itself, according to a new report submitted to state lawmakers.

Following last year’s overhaul initiated by County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D), the county schools now plan to reestablish a parent and community advisory council to increase parent engagement, hire a board liaison to work with the community and the administration, and work with the county government to create a legislative agenda and reduce spending. >>> Read more Washington Post

15 Ways To Identify Bad Leaders

untitled1

It’s important to realize that just because someone holds a position of leadership, doesn’t necessarily mean they should. Put another way, not all leaders are created equal. The problem many organizations are suffering from is a recognition problem – they can’t seem to recognize good leaders from bad ones. In today’s column  we will address how to identify bad leaders by pointing out a few things that should be obvious, but apparently aren’t.

1. Leaders who can’t see it, probably won’t find it: Leaders without vision will fail. Leaders who lack vision cannot inspire teams, motivate performance, or create sustainable value. Poor vision, tunnel vision, vision that is fickle, or a non-existent vision will cause leaders to fail. A leader’s job is to align the organization around a clear and achievable vision. This cannot occur when the blind lead the blind.

2. When leaders fail to lead themselves: A leader who lacks character or integrity will not endure the test of time. It doesn’t matter how intelligent, affable, persuasive, or savvy a person is, if they are prone to rationalizing unethical behavior based upon current or future needs, they will eventually fall prey to their own undoing. Optics over ethics is not a formula for success.

3. Put-up or shut-up: Nothing smacks of poor leadership like a lack of performance. Nobody is perfect, but leaders who consistently fail are not leaders, no matter how much you wish they were. While past performance is not always a certain indicator of future events, a long-term track record of success should not be taken lightly. Someone who has consistently experienced success in leadership roles has a much better chance of success than someone who has not. It’s important to remember unproven leaders come with a high risk premium. Smart companies recognize potential, but they reward performance.

4. Beware the know-it-all: The best leaders are acutely aware of how much they don’t know. They have no need to be the smartest person in the room, but have the unyielding desire to learn from others. I’ve often said, leaders who are not growing cannot lead a growing enterprise. One of the hallmarks of great leaders is their insatiable curiosity. If a leader isn’t extremely curious about every aspect of their organization, trust me when I say there are huge problems on the horizon.

5. When there’s a failure to communicate: When leaders are constantly flummoxed by those who don’t seem to get it, there exists both a leadership and communications problem. Show me a leader with poor communication skills and I’ll show you someone who will be short-lived in their position. Great leaders can communicate effectively across mediums, constituencies, and environments. They are active listeners, fluid thinkers, and know when to dial it up, down, or off.

6. It’s all about them: If a leader doesn’t understand the concept of “service above self” they will not engender the trust, confidence, and loyalty of those they lead. Any leader is only as good as his or her team’s desire to be led by them. An overabundance of ego, pride, and arrogance are not positive leadership traits. Real leaders take the blame and give the credit – not the other way around. Long story short; if a leader receives a vote of non-confidence from their subordinates…game over.

7. Sing a little Kumbaya: While love and leadership are certainly two words you don’t often hear in the same sentence, We can assure you that rarely does great leadership exist without love being present and practiced. In fact, if you examine failed leaders as a class, you’ll find that a lack of love, misplaced love, or misguided love were a contributing cause of said failures, if not the root cause. Empathy, humility and kindness are signs of leadership strength – not weakness.

8. One size fits all leadership style: The best leaders are fluid and flexible in their approach. They understand the power of, and necessity for contextual leadership. “My way or the highway” leadership styles don’t play well in today’s world, will result in a fractured culture, and ultimately a non-productive organization. Only those leaders who can quickly recognize and adapt their methods to the situation at hand will be successful over the long haul. Think open-source not proprietary, surrender not control, and collaborate not dictate.

9. Lack of focus: Leadership is less about balance and more about priority. The best leaders are ruthless in their pursuit of focus. Those leaders who lack the focus and attention to detail needed to apply leverage and resources in an aggressive and committed fashion will perish. Leaders who are not intentional and are not focused, will fail themselves and their team. Leaders who lack discipline will model the wrong behaviors and will inevitably spread themselves too thin. Organizations are at the greatest risk when leaders lose their focus. Intentions must be aligned with results for leaders to be effective.

10. Death by comfort zone: The best organizations beat their competition to the future, and the best leaders understand how to pull the future forward. Leaders satisfied with the status quo, or those who tend to be more concerned about survival than growth won’t do well over the long-run. The best leaders are focused on leading change and innovation to keep their organizations fresh, dynamic and growing. Bottom line – leaders who build a static business doom themselves to failure.

11. Not paying attention to the consumer: Leaders not attuned to the needs of the market will fail. As the old saying goes, if you’re not taking care of your customers, someone else will be more than happy to. Successful leaders focus on the consumer experience, which in turn leads to satisfaction and loyalty. The best leaders find ways to consistently engage the consumer and incorporate them into their innovation and planning initiatives. If you ignore, mistreat, or otherwise don’t value your customer base, your days as a leader are most certainly numbered.

12. Get Invested: Leaders not fully committed to investing in those they lead will fail. The best leaders support their team, build into their team, mentor and coach their team, and they truly care for their team. A leader not fully invested in their team won’t have a team – at least not an effective one. Never forget the old saying, people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care – words to live by for leaders.

13. The “A” word: Real leaders are accountable. They don’t blame others, don’t claim credit for the success of their team, but always accept responsibility for failures that occur on their watch. Most of all, leaders are accountable to their team. I’ve always said that leaders not accountable to their people will eventually be held accountable by their people.

14. It’s the culture stupid: The lesson here is that culture matters – forget this and all other efforts with regard to talent initiatives will be dysfunctional, if not altogether lost. Don’t allow your culture to evolve by default, create it by design. The first step in cultural design is to be very, very careful who you let through the front door. People, their traits, attitudes, and work ethic (or lack thereof) are contagions. This can be positive or negative – the choice is yours. The old saying, “talent begets talent” is true, but talent that aligns with culture will produce better results than talent that does not.

15. Show some chutzpa: Leadership absent courage is a farce. We are not referring to arrogance or bravado, but real courage. It takes courage to break from the norm, challenge the status quo, seek new opportunities, cut your losses, make the tough decision, listen rather than speak, admit your faults, forgive the faults of others, not allow failure to dampen your spirit, stand for those not capable of standing for themselves, and to remain true to your core values. You can do none of these things without courage. Courage is having the strength of conviction to do the right thing when it would just be easier to do things right.

The moral of this story is leaders need to be honest, have a demonstrated track record of success, be excellent communicators, place an emphasis on serving those they lead, be fluid in approach, have laser focus, and a bias toward action. If these traits are not possessed by your current leadership team, or your emerging leaders, you will be in for a rocky road ahead…

Which of these traits stand out to you? Do you have any other signs of ineffective leaders worthy of mention? Leave a comment and share your insights with others…

Opponents to hold Common Core protest at MSDE…

…as part of national event.

msde_store_front

Opponents of Common Core and takeover of schools in Maryland will be holding a protest on Monday, November 18, 2013 from 10am to noon at the headquarters of the Maryland State Department of Education at 200 West Baltimore Street in Baltimore.

The event is part of a national protest against Common Core and public corruption in Education that will take place in states across the country. Some parents are against common core and others are driven by the fight against public corruption in Education here in Maryland. The chosen date has significance to the movement, being not only the first day of American Education Week, but also Revolution Day.

Organizers are encouraging parents, students, teachers, and others to attend.  More information, will be posted as it becomes available on the Facebook page “Stop Common Core in Maryland”. This is a bipartisan event involving people of different diverse backgrounds who mean well for their communities and the United States.

Above all, they want to see a greater level of accountability and transparency involving the Maryland state Board of Education which yields a lot of power. Many homeless students and other unfortunate students in the system are being left behind by the unmonitored standards.

The problem was created by a top-down philosophy; the solution will come from the bottom up. Many parents in PG County are supportive of  president Obama and Maryland Governor O’Malley but they want to see an end to corruption within Prince George’s County public schools and Maryland. Maryland state has  senior officers involved in discrimination starting with Dr. Charlene Dukes President of Maryland State Board of Education and Dr. Lillian Lowery Maryland State superintendent of Schools pictured below.  Please help spread the word and join us on November 18, 2013.

To join the fight against public corruption in schools, join the Facebook pages: Call your elected officials now and demand changes within the top school system leadership in Maryland. We must create accountability and transparency. Say “No” to corruption. This is because of entrenched ethnicisation and political manipulation, the ugly face of repression is raising its head. The system and its hirelings are already working hard to prop up a repressive system. Just like it happened many years ago in the state, the democratic ideals enshrined in the constituton are being betrayed by the conscienceless and unashamed clique of usurpers who are remnants of the former repressive regimes of Jack Johnson era. To them, the constitution is just a piece of paper which they embrace when it suits them and discard when it does not. People can no longer express themselves freely anymore and give proper solutions to society. This is not the Maryland we want our future generations to inherit.

In Maryland:

0

Dr. Lillian M. Lowery Maryland State Superintendent  of schools has been criticized for showing very poor leadership skills in various ways including discriminatory conduct and received an F grade for Common Core meetings so far.

drdukes

In our opinion, We aver and therefore believe Maryland State Board of Education President Dr. Charlene Dukes shown here has demonstrated a culture of corrupt leadership style and continues “an integrated pattern of pay to play” and manipulation during her tenure.

Our children cannot live on election promises, expensive hairdo’s, decorated buildings with their names and top of the line auto imports. Please let us focus on where our bread is battered. Performance, integrity and high values. When our kids succed, then you can go get your hairdo on – until then, please refrain from this unagreeable behavior.

USE OF GRIEVANCE SYSTEM IN PGCPS.

  Grievance

USE OF GRIEVANCE SYSTEM IN PGCPS

The Grievance system is unique process that governs dispute resolutions in the schools.  Principal, supervisor are made aware of the grievance and can address it before it comes to the attention of the principal’s supervisor. If the grievance remains unresolved at Step 1, it then proceeds to the attention of the principal’s supervisor. The purpose of a grievance is generally to enforce the terms of a collective bargaining agreement between the unions.

The following unions in PGCPS District led by ASASP, PGCEA, ACE-AFSCME Local 2250 and SEIU Unions filed grievances on behalf of several members on several occasions. These grievances proceeded all the way up the chain of command for Prince George’s County Public school district to various managers, Directors and Chiefs, Superintendent William Hite Jr., Dr. Crawley who resigned recently and others also received grievances. However, the PGCPS management did nothing to address the discrimination, retaliation and other corrupt activities, despite being aware of the issues. The management failed to respond to any of the Union grievances filed by the Union because the Unions themselves are involved in questionable activities. It is this egregious conduct fueled by Thatcher Law firm corruption which has polarized the whole school District. The whole school District will never move forward until corrupt lawyers are cleansed from the system.

The terrorist attacks in 2001 were aimed not only at destroying buildings and human lives, but also at undermining Americans’ confidence in their government. While the terrorists’ attempts at the latter ultimately backfired, they did illustrate that our country is only as strong as the commitment of our people and leaders to protect the ideals upon which it is based: individual liberty, freedom of expression, and the ability to redress grievances through a system of laws rather than violence. When lawyers for the local board retaliate and acts unethically on behalf of the School District, when the unions appointed lawyers and other attorneys hired by staff are compromised, they undermine the rule of law and faith in the system. The image of lawyers is not just a matter of professional or personal pride; it affects the public’s belief in our justice system, and ultimately, our faith in our democracy. The fact that there has been so many cases in both the State and Federal courts filed against PGCPS by several employees in recent years, is a clear manifestation that there are many problems within the PG County School District. We must demand answers from our elected officials in regards to the Thatcher Law firm which is engaged in criminal conspiracy with Mr. Bryan A chapman, Mr. Damon Felton and others in defrauding staff within the PG County district.   One female employee who protested mistreatment of her colleagues was fired in the middle of her discovery case with malice rather than settle the dispute. There is a big possibility that she might never even win the case because of what her attorney did to the case in conjunction with the Thatcher Law Firm and Mr. Roger Thomas. Only time will tell.  It’s clear there’s a criminal cabal around the Thatcher Law Firm that’s giving deadly advice to lawyers hired by various personnel. The Book of Mark, 8:36, sternly asks: “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?”

Other PGCPS employees have been chased away recently like goats in the middle of Savanna after filing cases… Who does this to employees for exercising their rights and fighting for the rights of others? Who does this? Who else is involved in this criminal enterprise?  What happened to common decency ladies and Gentlemen?

In this school year, we pray that the new County Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kevin Maxwell is going to look into these issues with sincerity and demand a new beginning from a new set of attorneys committed to the rule of law in PG County. Time has come to move in the right direction with new leadership and a new agenda!

Lawlessness in PGCPS Sasscer.

TRUTH

An increasing number of people believe that we owe it to future generations of people not to undermine the quality of the community’s life. When asked how we are accountable for the moral duties of our descendants, the plain answer is that they are people. Persons have human worth and rights. Our actions and decisions, if not made in good faith, undermine their opportunities for fulfilling lives – whether they live today or tomorrow.

We believe this common sense view is correct.

After the passage of HB 1107 by the General Assembly which was signed into law by Governor O’Malley early last month and goes into effect on June 1, 2013, we want to encourage everyone to join forces here in PG County to support members of the Prince George’s County House and Senate Delegations for delivering incredible legislative success for residents of the County. They did this for sake of the future generations. Prince George’s County was not given to you by your parents; it was loaned to you by your children… let us take care of it for them.

Any choices that exclude Verjeana Jacobs and her husband David as a leader in Prince George’s County Public schools (PGCPS) is a tremendous advantage for our children. The proposal giving additional power will enable Mr. Baker to exercise much needed and long overdue exercise of authority. PGCPS desperately needs this overall and drastic change in direction and Modus operandi. We cannot afford to continue with the present dubious set up which allows the school Board to act disingenuously and with malice. Verjeana Jacobs and company are wasting and maundering people’s time. Their small little games are a distraction to the community, all the time pretending to ‘love to educate’ the children.  The cartel which includes hustlers and con artists, to the ninth degree, parading in the PGCPS solely for the purpose of ‘taking’ money is a disgrace to the human race. The league not only includes PGCPS legal departmentMs. Verjeana Jacobs, Labor relations led by Mr. James Whattam et al but also communications Director. It is a gang of masquerades with nefarious, insidious and capricious intend.  They have perpetrated, air brand rip off schemes unabated for decades clandestinely including a ‘bonanza’ of arrays which includes the PGCPS unions.

The co-opting of the unions into unholy alliance has been severe to the detriment of our students, hardworking staff and families of PG County. The election and elevation of Mr. Baker with enhanced powers is a welcome recipe to an othinus smudging of unending horror show on PGCPS street with the current Board chairperson Ms. Verjeana Jacobs in a starring role as Freddie with popcorn. Unfortunately in our scenario, there is no intermission. Our only hope is on Mr. Baker supported by others to help put an end to the fiasco and bad acting. It is our hope that he will put an end to this unholy alliance

For the most part, PGCPS administration is racist, they like engagement of conmanship, gerrymandering and plain professional misconduct, including nepotism and corruption in conspiracy with others.

Above all, they are willful violators of everything under the sun. Their history, whether on or off the record, demonstrates, if not imputes, incompetent. They do not abide by contracts, laws, rules, etc. They are constantly being sued for egregious violations. Don’t believe us?

The trivial pursuits and cheer foolishness engaged in by the Board of Education in hybrid situation with the PGCPS Unions, bogs the mind. This set of unethical behavior engaged by the Board of education for Prince George’s County is hurting the taxpayers of Prince George’s County and our poor children. There is something completely rotten about the state of PGCPS. While doing anything but work at their desks, the Board of Ed. admin staff reads the newspaper, novels or plays on their cell phones. Others are selling real estate, meat, jewelry etc. without consequences.  Every now and then, you have bus drivers who appear drunk and sometimes sleeping on the bus. Nevertheless, to implement proper and effective change, We must begin this one at Sasscer. The main rot starts at Sasscer administrative building in Upper Marlboro and trickles down to schools, Bus lots and the Unions. The epicenter of the PGCPS corruption is currently rotating around legal and labor relations departments at Sasscer Adminstartive Building. Something needs to be done to change things for the better. No organization has ever thrived on lawlessness forever.

The Communication Director Mr. Brian Coleman handles school District matters as his own. He plays favorites and does not like County Executive Baker, the Washington post and others who try to expose the situation. (PGCPSLies). He should be the first one to go for unshamely hiding the corruption and for using the school system email to advance his own sick agenda. (See here). The employee should not have used the school system email. This is a clear example of shameful, abuse of authority and willful neglect of duty in order to undermine the government.

The so called Elected School Board, on its own, is a joke.  We all know that and so does Mr. Baker, Governor O’ Malley, the State of MD Courts, etc.

Corruption always starts at the top. The fish always rots first in the head and smells the worst. Remember the last bad fish we had and now causing problems elsewhere? Name the last good superintendent? How many high ranking directors have been caught doing something illegal or sued for civil issues or discrimination? All of this is hush hush.

All in all, the system is broken from the ground up. Our question to you is: “why would anyone highly qualified that is in their right mind want to teach in PGCPS when they can get a job in neighboring counties that have better resources and prospects in every aspect?” We must at least fix the issues identified in our blogs first in order to create a stable enabling environment for a better future for our kids.

Our work lies with those of us who are raising the next generation. It lies in teaching our sons and daughters to become liberated, respectful adults who know that bad leaders who willfully break the law and practice corruption are making a choice, and will be punished.

Barely ten (10) years ago, we could not have imagined thousands of people endorsing a fight against corruption in PG County, let alone Maryland General Assembly voting to make changes swiftly as we have seen these past few weeks, indeed, it has been a major breakthrough. And yet, there is still work to be done. These elaborate systems have taken generations to flourish and allow manipulation to become patriarchy, caste and social and sexual inequality that allow abuse to flourish. But unlike the weather, discrimination is not a byproduct of climate change. It can can be fixed. We need to shelve all the gibberish about status and virtue and “it’s a democratic right to be racist, discriminatory and practice corruption and so forth.” We need to put responsibility where it lies: on men and women who violate the law willfully and on all of us who let them get away with it while we point accusing fingers at their victims.

With respect for the humanity in all persons, they would surely have avoided endangering the conditions of a truly human life for any person, – future or present. By falling short of this moral ideal, we fail in our moral duty to future generations, regardless of who they will be. Since these are moral duties of justice, our breach of them now infringes rights they will eventually acquire.

We conclude that we ought to persist in our common sense view that we do have a moral responsibility to the future generations, and that unless we change our ways, we infringe their moral rights. The PGCPS status quo of continuous unabated corruption, conmanship, gerrymandering and professional misconduct etc. is not the answer! It is up to each one of us to tirelessly strive to save the future for our kids and create peaceful neighborhoods. This is the wakeup call against the status quo. It is not going to be business as usual. It is Mr. Baker’s time with the support of our elected representatives in Annapolis Maryland.
