The 14-year-old boy accused of stabbing a 16-year-old classmate at a Maryland high school Tuesday morning was fed up with relentless bullying, a student who witnessed the incident said.
The student who reportedly stabbed another teen tried to avoid a fight but defended himself when the other youth refused to back down, a student at Frederick Douglass High School in Upper Marlboro told NBC4.

“He told him to leave him alone and to get away, and that he didn’t want to fight,” the student said about the incident caught on cellphone video. NBC4 is protecting his identity.

“The kid who did the stabbing was trying to defend himself, then finally the knife made its appearance and the other student was stabbed. He didn’t realize he was stabbed until later, and he kept hitting and hitting,” the classmate said.

Alvin Butler of Bowie, Maryland said he created a program to help schools cope with bullying. Text 2 Stop It lets students anonymously report by text their problems with bullies.

“You ask them a question, ‘How did it go today’ and you get, “Good, fine,'” Butler said. ”If you want to find out what’s going on, text them and then you’ll see they’re ready for conversation they wouldn’t have verbally.”

The program that costs $1.25 per student per year is in use in Queen Anne County schools, but Prince George’s County schools turned it down.
Prince George’s County Schools spokeswoman Keesha Bullock said the schools already have a comprehensive system for dealing with bullying.

“We don’t believe that we have a wide-spread problem, and we encourage people to report it as much as we can so we can take appropriate action,” she said.

The student who was stabbed is recovering from his injuries. The accused stabber is being charged as a juvenile. NBC4 learned today that four additional students have been suspended for the rest of the school year because of their involvement in the incident.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WJLA) – Two students were injured in a stabbing at a high school in Prince George’s County early Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred around 7:40 a.m. inside Frederick Douglass High School in Upper Marlboro.

Two students were engaged in a physical altercation when one of the students pulled out a knife and stabbed the other student, according to police.

One student sustained serious injuries while the student accused of pulling the knife only sustained minor injuries. Both students were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The student who pulled the knife is currently in police custody and charges are pending.

Officials said they had no information as to what sparked the fight, and the incident is under investigation.

In a Twitter message, the police said the incident “stemmed from dispute.”

Vigil held for PGCPS teens injured in shooting…

…while playing video games.UPPER MARLBORO, Md. –

Cold and windy weather didn’t keep hundreds of people from attending a vigil at Frederick Douglass High School in Upper Marlboro.

They were here Friday night after police say a 16-year-old football player shot and injuring his two teammates and then himself earlier in the week.

The theme of this vigil was all about hope as all three teenagers are recovering from their injuries, with one of the victims in critical condition.

Dozens of Prince George’s County students and their parents used the vigil to heal each other after three of their varsity football players were shot.

The prayers in the emotional vigil happened near the field here at the high school.

Police say the shooting began as an argument between 16-year-old football player Delano Dunmore and two of his teammates.

They were all playing video games in Dunmore’s Clinton home on Sunday.

But police say after the argument, Dunmore grabbed his mother’s registered gun and shot his two classmates before turning the gun on himself.

Dunmore is being charged as an adult in this case. He is facing a list of charges including two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Football player allegedly shot teammates, self after argument

A month after the Frederick Douglass High School football team won the state 2A championships and three days after it was honored by the Prince George’s County school board, a team member allegedly shot and wounded two other players and himself.

Delano Dunmore, 16, has been charged as an adult with attempted first-degree and second-degree murder, according to Prince George’s County police.

Investigators believe an argument erupted in Dunmore’s Clinton home Sunday afternoon and officers arrived at the scene around 4 p.m. to find the three teams members suffering from gunshot wounds, police said. The victims, whose names have not been released, are 16 and 17 years old and one of them is at a local hospital in critical condition, police said.

Sherrie Johnson, a spokeswoman for the county school system, said extra counselors will be available to any Frederick Douglass student who would like support processing through the incident.
